私の国、フィンランド国中は今回の日本の地震と津波がショックで、テレビのニュースでもインターネットでもその行方に目が離せません。フィンランド国民は日本とその国民に尊敬の念を抱いており、日本の皆さんが今回の大惨事を乗り切ると堅く信じています。

しかし、同時にあなた達が今後どう試練に立ち向かわねばならないかを思った時、私自身、深い悲しみに包まれてしまいます。わが国を思えば、かつて歴史上、非常に困難な時代がありました。人々の生命が失われたこと、けがを治療すること、生き残った方々の生存の為に基本的な生活環境を提供すること等、国全体の大惨事がどういったことなのかを、何かしらは理解出来るのではと思います。

フィンランドの教会では、今日本を思って人々の祈りが続いており、フィンランド国会は日本国民と犠牲になられた方々を尊ぶべく一分間の黙祷を捧げました。実は、黙祷開始を宣言した国会議長自身が 2004 年タイ・カオラックの津波に遭遇し、当時は水位が下がるまで彼自身と 4 歳の息子は 4 時間も電柱にしがみついていたという経験を持っていました。

フィンランドのニュース解説ではこの絶望の時でさえ、被災現場での物品の強奪や列の割り込みも無く、ひたすら落ち着き平穏で、他人を思いやって助け合う、日本人の冷静さが取り上げられています。
フィンランド国民は、日本がこの大惨事を生き延び、損害の数々を修復し、そしてかつてより、さらにより良い状況を必ず作り出せると信じています。

我々は皆、音楽を愛しています。なぜならば、音楽は喜ぶ時は人を魅了し、絶望の中にある人には癒しを与え、様々の種類の音楽で人々の感情を表現できるからです。
今はまさに悲しみの為の鎮魂歌と再建を元気づける音楽が必要な時だと感じています。

私は、日本の友人達から最近頂いた桜の写真を見たとき、花々が咲き、鳥がさえずり巣作りする春はそれでも来るのだと思いました。
人生は人々を強くする。

私の思いと祈りはいつも皆さんと一緒です。

Dear Japanese Friends

Whole Finland was shocked by the earthquake and tsunami and we have been following the situation in hourly news and in the net. Finnish people respect Japan and Japanese people and we believe firmly that you will survive from this catastrophe, but at the same time we are very sad for what you have to go through. Our own nation has had very difficult times in the history and we may somehow understand what this kind of nationwide catastrophe means in terms of loss of lives, rehabiting people and providing basic living conditions for the survivors.

In Finnish churches we have prayed for Japan and our parliament have had a minute’s silence to respect Japan people and the victims of the catastrophe. The chairman of the parliament, who declared the silence, was himself in the 2004 tsunami in Khao Lak, keeping himself and his son for 4 hours in a telephone pole until the water went down. We have had press comments of the calmness of Japanese in this moment of despair, no robbing, no cutting in queues, just calm peace, respect and helping of other people. We are absolutely sure that Japan will survive this disaster, repair the damages and make things even better than before.

We all love music as it can enchants us in joy and comforts in despair, and we can express our emotions in different kinds of music. It is time of requiems for sorrow and cheery music for rebuilding.

When I saw recent cherry blossom pictures from Japanese friends, I thought that spring is coming in any case, flowers are blossoming, birds are singing and making nests.
Life is stronger.
