Paul Mac, Editor of Audio Media, goes to Helsinki to explore the Finnish broadcaster YLE's new outside broadcast truck. The OD-2 is YLE's new roadster, designed mainly for music. It has full recording, editing, mixing and transmission facilities built into the Mercedes frame. The truck is based around the new Lawo mc²80 console, which offers enough routing and processing possibilities to significantly reduce the amount of outboard and patch panels normally required in a truck of this size.
Genelec, DTS, Steinberg, Soundfield and Real Traps teamed up at the AES in San Francisco to show sound engineers how to successfully produce surround sound mixes. Starting with an acoustically treated space, monitors should be installed according to international recommendations.

Ninety minute seminars, entitled "Understanding Surround Production", will be held throughout the day in a room equipped with a state-of-the-art 6.1 multichannel system comprising of 2 x 1034B, 1 x 1034BC, 3 x 1038B and 1 x 7073A subwoofer. In the quest to unify the sound of all facilities within the new TVB City, Television Broadcasts Ltd., Hong Kong, has chosen Genelec as "the official" monitoring speaker. TVB's Audio Post Production facilities have since then installed 11 pairs of 1037BM, over 9 pairs of 1032APM, and a number of smaller speakers including 1031APM, 1030APM and 1029APM.
Oceanic, the London studio of Who guitarist Pete Townshend, has upgraded with a new Genelec 5.1 monitoring system based around the new 7071LSE subs, with their unique bass management. The Genelecs were installed especially so producer Bob Pridden could re-mix a live Who performance from Boston in 5.1 format.
For Reno Nicastro, the 'best stuff' includes a Pro Tools HD recording system with a ProControl control surface, 14 Avalon microphone preamps, a Soundfield microphone, and Lexicon 480 reverb. 'I rung around and I talked to a load of people, and then I listened to a load of speakers,' he says, 'Everywhere you go has these Genelec speakers, I had a listen to them, I went to a couple of studios and the guys really raved about them, so I decided on them. I got a pair of Genelec 1038A as main monitors and a 5.1 setup using 1029As.
